 FAQs

  • Costing is determined by size and medium. I work across a variety of both but, to give you an idea of the entry level, a lifesize charcoal portrait (head and shoulders) is £3000. I do also have some offers available and am open to discussing payment in instalments.

  • The right frame can make or break a beautiful work of art. Luckily, I know a variety of excellent craftsmen, across different price points who will take the fear out of framing. It also happens to be one of my side passions, so I’m always more than happy to talk frames!

  • My studio in Kent is purpose built for portrait painting and there is nowhere I would rather paint from. The surrounding countryside ensures a peaceful environment whilst also only being an hour train ride from London.

  • We kick things off with a Zoom consultation. You’re also welcome to come into the studio for a conversation but I know that that isn’t always feasible for everyone.

Once we’ve got a firm-ish idea of what kind of project you’re interested in, a trip to the studio is next. You can get a feel for the space and for me (you’ll have to spend quite some time here so it’s important you feel comfortable!).

Depending on the piece of work, we will then lay out a timetable for the sittings. This is a balance between fitting to your availability but also ensuring that I can complete the project in the right time period and time of year as I can’t paint portraits all year round.

The final stage, once we have done the sittings, is a protective varnish applied in the studio and a conversation about frames.

  • The amount of sittings is dependent on the size and medium. To give you a rough idea, a charcoal portrait requires 3-4 sittings whereas an oil portrait of the same size takes 6-8 sittings.

It is a unique experience that differs from sitter to sitter, some like to listen to music and podcasts, others want to talk about what I am doing and the process of the commission and some just want to sit in the peace of the studio.

  • Sittings take 2-3 hours but don’t worry, you don’t have to stand there like a statue. There are breaks and a natural rhythm will develop between artist and sitter. It is a very organic and friendly process.

  • To ensure that your face really shines in a painting and is the focus, it is important to wear clothes that are darker. There are certain fabrics that paint better than others and I will advise you on this in the lead up to your first sitting but my top tip is no v-necks!

  • These sizes are guidelines and other sizes are available. Typically the canvas is made to naturally fit the sitter and pose.
